Just what is “Zen?” It is hard to explain. Zen is a tradition of wisdom passed on since the time of the Sakyamuni Buddha. It is a path to fully awaken to your original nature, which is present right here, right now. It is the essence of wisdom and compassion. The word Zen is derived from the Chinese word “chán” and the sanskrit word “dhyana,” which mean “meditation.” In sanskrit, the root meaning is “to see, to observe, to look.”

ReplyDeleteBeautiful Zen necklace for the yoga teacher or student! I like the earthy combination of the wood, shell and ceramic.
ReplyDeleteFantastic necklace, Catherine! I love the Zen pendant and palm wood beads - they have such a tribal touch, but also remind me of Zen gardens for some reason.
ReplyDeleteOne big emphasis in Zen is clarity/emptiness of mind, and meditation that strives in an unstriving way for sudden enlightenment. I once tried meditating at a Zen center, after a friend talked me into it. The meditation length was 45 minutes, which is an eternity for beginners and no big deal for the experienced. At that time, I had zip experience with Zen, only some with Tibetan Buddhism (and sessions that were half the length—and could seem like an eternity themselves).
So I sit in this massive group circle, in this very big unadorned (height of Zen) room, sans any instruction, and wondering if it was Zen to lack instruction. As I pondered the issue, my stomach suddenly began to growl. Loudly. It was in dire need of supper and sounded like a wild creature was on the loose, wanting to eat someone. My friend started giggling, and I caught the giggles from him so bad, I couldn't stop and had to leave. Of course, the door was WAY over across the huge room. A Zen Buddhist nun followed me out the door, to make sure I was okay. "Meditating at dinner-time is always difficult," she said, smiling. lol.
we could all use a moment of zen - love this zen necklace and maybe it will help curb the munchies ... Mary :)
