Roses in the Desert - Julia's Beauties!

Julia, a good friend, doesn't live too far from our house.  She grows some of the most beautiful roses, not something I originally thought would do well here in the Desert Southwest.  But they thrive and aren't subject to many of the diseases as in more humid areas (no nasty chemicals used on them!).  Before the pandemic, Seamus and I would visit her at least once a week, usually on a Saturday afternoon for 2 hours or so.  Once the pandemic hit, we still visited, socially distanced outside, through heat and cold.  Seamus adores his Aunt Julia.  She spoils him by feeding him many of his favorite organic bison and apple jerky treats and loves on him throughout the stay.

I'm not sure how many years I've been doing a "Julia's Roses" blog - at least 3 or 4 now.  This is the newest addition  - a few weeks late but it's done.  So, if you love roses, I'd appreciate if you take a look, and, if you are so inclined, leave a comment on the blog itself.   Social media links are below the red rose.  Here's the link to the blog:

Heartline Bear Earrings, Spiny Oyster Shell Turquoise Handmade Jewelry

heartline bear earrings orange white turquoise enamel

The meaningful "Life Force" earrings feature artisan enamel heartline bears, Czech glass roller beads, spiny oyster shell and turquoise - unique jewelry for women.

Depicted as a line in the shape of an arrow, a heartline is extremely symbolic for the Zuni and many other Native American people. It represents the spiritual breath as the life force of an animal and is often portrayed on a bear due to their strength and fearlessness. The one of a kind LIFE FORCE earrings were inspired by a heartline bear. Created with eye-catching enameled bear charms, the meaningful earrings also feature white and gold Czech glass beads, orange spiny oyster shell, and genuine turquoise rounds. The mirror image heartline bears were individually artisan made from a copper base that was enameled with glass powders in oranges, white, turquoise and black. A black heartline arrow runs from the bear’s head to the back. As an added adornment, an Italian murrine glass cane was used to create an orange and white petaled flower in the center of each bear. The backside of the bear charms are finished with black enamel. To perfectly complement the colors of the heartline bears, three different elements were stacked above each bear. The first are premium faceted Czech glass roller beads created from translucent and opaque white glass. Above each roller bead, separated by a copper disc spacer, sits a single hand cut orange spiny oyster shell rondelle. Spiny oyster shell has been used to adorn Native American jewelry for centuries. A genuine turquoise round is found above the oyster shell, a gemstone that is sacred to many tribes. The turquoise beads are a rich blue color with a natural black matrix. Carefully designed and handmade by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs, the LIFE FORCE heartline bear earrings are a perfect jewelry gift for the woman who loves Native American symbolism and unique artisan designed earrings with a bear motif.

Southwest Church Cross Necklace, Terracotta Carnelian Handmade Jewelry

terracotta church jewelry with carnelian gemstones

The meaningful "Sagrada" handmade necklace features an artisan terracotta church with crosses pendant, carnelian in two shapes and sizes and turquoise Czech glass lantern beads - unique Southwest jewelry for women.

Many cities and towns in the Desert Southwest have an “old town” section dominated by a beautiful adobe church that exudes sacredness and history: Santa Fe, Tucson, El Paso, Albuquerque, Las Cruces - the list goes on. The beautifully rustic pendant featured on the SAGRADA handmade necklace is reminiscent of those memorable churches. The Southwest inspired artisan pendant was created from reddish-brown terracotta ceramic. A lovely matte turquoise wash was added that allows areas of the earthy terracotta to show through giving an ancient, distressed look. The original artisan design of a church with two crosses and clouds above was impressed into the clay giving great texture to the not quite rectangular pendant. The back of the pendant is unglazed and can be used as an aromatherapy diffuser - carefully dab a drop or two of essential onto the back and the scent will be released for hours. To perfectly highlight the colors of the terracotta church pendant, two shapes and sizes of glowing orange carnelian were used along with small turquoise Czech glass beads. The larger and darker carnelian beads are more roundish nugget shaped, each just a bit different, adding a rustic flare. They are a rich dark orange color with some streaks of lighter and darker orange. Seven of these are found on each side of the necklace. Separating the nuggets are hand cut carnelian discs in a lighter orange shade. Since the discs are hand cut, they are very similar in size and shape but also are a bit different. Four discs separate the rounds along with small copper beads. For added Southwest color, a single ridged turquoise Czech glass lantern bead is found in the middle of each set of discs, separated by small copper beads. A sleek pure copper toggle clasp set finishes the necklace securely. Carefully designed and handmade by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs, the peaceful SAGRADA necklace is a perfect gift for the woman who loves unique designer jewelry with a Southwest soul. “Sagrada” is Spanish for “sacred.”

Southwest Church Crosses Earrings, Yellow Blue Green Handmade Jewelry

handmade southwest church earrings jewelry gift for women

The "Southwest Serenity" handmade earrings feature artisan dangles with a Southwest church or mission scene, sunflower yellow Czech beads and sterling silver - unique jewelry for women.

Perfectly named, the SOUTHWEST SERENITY handmade earrings are both beautiful and lightweight to wear. The one of a kind earrings feature artisan made dangles, sunflower yellow Czech glass beads and sterling silver. The exquisite square shaped dangles were created from artists’ backboard, a heavy duty archival quality paper board. A permanent transfer was applied. As you can see in the photos, the design on the dangles is a serene looking Southwest style church or mission with trees. The main entrance of the church is red and two bell towers are found on either side in the classic white stucco of Southwest missions. A cross tops the left bell tower and the entrance. A large tree is found to the left of the church and a smaller one to the right. The sky is a rich blue and the grass is green, perhaps after a monsoon rain. The charms were given several coats of a sealant for long wear. Because the earrings have a Southwest design with a wide blue sky, there is almost always a blazing sun. To perfectly mimic the sun, three faceted sunflower yellow Czech glass rondelles were used. Two of the glittering yellow rondelles are stacked above the dangles, separated by a sterling silver daisy spacers, and one dangles below. The yellow glass beads are translucent so they glow amazingly when the earrings are worn and, because of the faceting, they add sparkle.  Carefully designed and handmade by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs, the unique and lightweight SOUTHWEST SERENITY earrings were created for the woman who adores exploding Southwest churches / missions and loves to wear one of a kind artisan jewelry.

Please note: the artist who made these charms says “although these findings have been sealed on all sides and edges, they are not suitable for wearing in the shower or any water sport activities.”

Southwest Lampwork Earrings, Coral Red Turquoise Ivory Handmade Jewelry

blue ivory coral jewelry southwest lampwork glass beads coral czech discs

The beautiful "Southwest Days" earrings were created with colorful artisan handmade lampwork glass beads, coral Czech glass discs and sterling silver - unique jewelry for women.

The SOUTHWEST DAYS handmade earrings are definitely eye-catching with their rich colors so indicative of the canyons, mountains and the immense blue sky of the Desert Southwest. Unique jewelry that definitely screams the casual elegance of the Southwest - and also perfect for 4th of July wear - the earrings feature artisan handmade lampwork glass beads, coral Czech glass discs and sterling silver. The vibrantly colored lampwork beads were individually artisan created from turquoise blue, ivory and coral red glass. After the beads were kiln fired at high heat for strength, they were given an acid bath to etch the glass into a velvety, matte finish. The matte finish brings out the intricate, organic details of the beads - just look at the photos above to enjoy their lovely uniqueness. Because the beads were individually handmade, they are similar but not exactly the same, each bead an original work of art.  To perfectly complement the Southwest inspired lampwork beads, deep coral colored Czech glass disc beads cap the top and bottom of each, separated by small sterling silver daisy spacers. The coral discs have a permanent silver wash which adds a wonderful metallic glow to the design.  The SOUTHWEST DAYS lampwork earrings were carefully designed and handmade by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs for the woman who adores wearing one of a kind, Desert Southwest inspired jewelry.

Zuni Black Bear Earrings, Turquoise Coral Handmade Southwest Jewelry

zuni fetish bear earrings

The handmade "K’winna Aynshe "earrings feature Zuni black bear fetish glass beads, genuine faceted turquoise, red coral rounds and sterling silver chain - jewelry for women.

The unique Zuni inspired fetish bear earrings certainly contain a hearty dose of Southwest splendor. The handmade dangle earrings, named K’WINNA AYNSHE, feature Czech glass black bear fetish beads, genuine faceted blue turquoise, red coral rounds and patterned sterling silver chain. The eye catchers of the wonderful earrings are the Zuni inspired Czech glass black bear beads. The beads started out with an opaque black glass base. To give a look of oldness to the bears, a mottled Picasso finish of mainly amber and cream was applied with pale hints of red here and there.  To add more than a bit of Southwest feel to the one of a kind earrings, faceted turquoise and red coral rounds were added above each bear. The turquoise is a lovely sky blue color, and because of the facets, adds subtle sparkle. The red coral rounds help highlight the bits of red in the Picasso finish.  The earrings are perfect to wear with your casual blue jeans and t-shirt, but they also will be radiant with your little black dress. Created for the woman who adores one of a kind, artisan jewelry, the K’WINNA AYNSHE bear earrings were carefully designed and handmade by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs. “K’winna Aynshe” is Zuni for “black bear.”

Chakra Zuni Spirit Bear Necklace, Red Creek Jasper Rainbow Jewelry

rainbow chakra spirit bear necklace with red creek jasper gift for her

The meaningful "Chakra Bear" necklace features an artisan handmade / hand painted spirit bear pendant, red creek jasper heishe and copper - unique gift for women.

Filled with the earthiness of the Desert Southwest and the mindfulness of yoga, the CHAKRA BEAR handmade necklace is a true jewelry beauty. The focal of the one of a kind necklace is a hand painted copper spirit bear which is perfectly complemented by red creek jasper heishe gemstones and copper beads. The Zuni-inspired bear pendant was artisan created from beginning to end from copper precious metal clay.  The copper pendant was given a darker patina and then polished to bring out the wavy line detailing on the bear’s body. The “wheel” near the bear’s belly was hand painted in meaningful chakra / rainbow colors. To keep the pendant bright and beautiful for years to come, it was coated with a glossy sealant.  Red creek jasper heishe highlights the beauty of the spirit bear pendant. As you can see in the photos, the natural earthy colors of the red creek jasper are breathtaking: burnt reds, sage greens, olive greens, tans, grays and mustard yellows. The small disc shaped heishe beads were hand cut so are not all exactly the same shape and size (although they are very close), something that adds rustic appeal to the necklace design. Copper bicone beads with small copper round beads were scattered through the heishe to keep the necklace with a sinuous flow.  Carefully designed and handmade by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs, the CHAKRA BEAR necklace is a perfect gift for anyone who loves the Desert Southwest and loves the combination of yoga chakras with the symbolism of a spirit bear.

Zia Sun Necklace, Red Coral Turquoise New Mexico Handmade Jewelry Gift

zia sun necklace gift for her

The enchanting SACRED ZIA handmade necklace is filled with a soul satisfying sense of the mysteries of the Desert Southwest. The one of a kind necklace features a glowing, artisan made sterling Zia sun pendant. Red coral tubes and turquoise colored Czech glass beads complement the pendant perfectly. The handmade pendant was created from tarnish resistant sterling silver Zia sun pendant, a symbol that has long been sacred to the Zia Indians and is featured on the New Mexico state flag. The pendant was cast with a raised sun and recessed sun rays in the middle of the round pendant and then lightly oxidized to bring out the fine details of the symbol. The Zia pendant was then polished to a mirror like finish (which made it hard to photograph as it reflected my silhouette, the sky and clouds and other nearby things) on both the front and back. Please be assured, the pendant is shiny sterling silver. The back has the .925 stamp of sterling silver and the initials of the artist. A sterling silver closed ring securely connects the Zia sun pendant to the main body of the necklace.

zia sun red coral and turquoise jewelry gift for women

Red and turquoise are colors associated with Santa Fe and the Desert Southwest, so they were used to continue with the spirit of the Zia sun. Rustic red coral tubes make up the major part of the necklace. The rich red coral is termed “rustic” because the tubes are not exactly the same size, both in length and diameter. The larger tubes can be found in he front, with the smaller to the back. Between the first eight tubes are turquoise colored tri-cut Czech glass beads. Each turquoise bead has three facets in it (tri-cut) to add subtle sparkle. At the back of the necklace, the turquoise beads can be found between each coral grouping of three. Small sterling silver beads separate each piece of coral and each turquoise bead from its neighbor. A beautiful sterling silver toggle clasp with a “ray” design flawlessly finishes the necklace. Carefully designed and handmade by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs, the SACRED ZIA handmade necklace is a perfect gift for the woman who adores meaningful jewelry designed in the Southwest.

southwest zia sun necklace with red and turquoise

*** The Zia Indians regard the Sun as a sacred symbol. Their symbol, a red circle with groups of rays pointing in four directions, has been painted on ceremonial vases, drawn on the ground around campfires and used to introduce newborns to the Sun for centuries. Four is a sacred number, reflecting the basic harmony of all things in the universe. The Zia symbol represents the Circle of Life: the four directions, the four seasons, the four times of day and the four stages of life. The Zia also believe that man has four sacred obligations: to develop a strong body, a clear mind, a pure spirit and a devotion to the well being of the people. The Zia sun symbol is on the New Mexico state flag.

Here is the important information for the SACRED ZIA necklace:
  • Tarnish resistant sterling silver Zia sun pendant: app. 15 mm x 1.5 mm; artisan made by Bev in Albuquerque, NM
  • Red coral tubes: from app. 15 mm x 5 mm to 10 mm x 4 mm
  • Turquoise tri-cut Czech glass beads: app. 4 mm x 3 mm
  • Metal: sterling silver
  • Clasp: sterling silver toggle clasp set
  • Length: app. 19” / 48.3 cm
  • Pendant drop: app. 0.75” / 1.9 cm including the sterling silver jump ring bail

Petroglyph Earrings, Boho Rustic Ancient Lightweight Handmade Jewelry

petroglyph inspired earrings for women

Big and bold, the unique ART OF THE ANCIENTS handmade earrings will definitely add a healthy dose of lightweight boho dazzle to your earlobes! The rustic one of a kind earrings feature artisan handmade, petroglyph inspired polymer clay dangles in an etched and multicolored assortment of hand painted designs. Stacked above the rustic charms are glowing Czech glass Saturn beads, faceted black Czech glass rondelles and jet Swarovski crystals to perfectly complement the colors of the polymer clay pieces. The glorious dangles were individually created by polymer clay artist Pati Bannister. A freehand design inspired by the petroglyph art of the Desert Southwest, each long, triangular dangle was individually hand carved into black polymer clay with spirals, swirls flowing lines, and other designs. They were then painted with acrylic metallic pigments in various shades of gold, sunset orange, blue and pale green. As you can see, each charm is different but is very similar in look and feel. The back of each polymer clay dangle is signed by the artist and also painted. A light coat of crystal varnish was applied to each dangle, leaving them with a smooth, silky feel and an amazing sheen.

petroglyph inspired jewelry for women gift idea

To brilliantly complement the colors of the rustic artisan polymer clay dangles, a Czech glass Saturn bead and black glass and crystals were added above the charms. The raised center is crisply faceted for subtle sparkle. Above the Saturn beads, separated by copper daisy spacers, are faceted black Czech glass rondelles and sparkling “jet” black Swarovski crystals for even more sparkle. A perfect jewelry gift idea for the woman who appreciates wearable art and loves a boho look, the unique ART OF THE ANCIENTS artisan earrings were carefully designed and handmade by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs.
