Big and bold and oh, so beautiful, the RED HOT handmade necklace surely will make a statement each and every time it is worn. The large rounds are magnesite, a gemstone that is naturally an off white color with brown veins. Since it takes a dye easily, you often can find it in various colors, including red. Eleven permanently dyed red magnesite rounds make up the front of the necklace. The color is a rich, eye-catching red, each stone with darker veining, some with more, some less. The finish of the gemstones is glossy, oftentimes reflecting the light.  So that the unique necklace drapes gracefully, a single, high shine black onyx disc is found between each red magnesite round. A 3 mm sterling silver bead is found on each side of the discs. Three groups of five black onyx discs finish the back of the necklace, each group separated by a sterling bead. To securely clasp the necklace, a lovely sterling silver hook clasp set with hammered texture was used. Viking Horse Necklace, Sleipnir Scrimshaw Onyx Norse Handmade Jewelry

The unique "Sleipnir" horse necklace features a Viking inspired polymer clay horse head pendant, black onyx discs and sterling silver - one of a kid jewelry for women.

Perfect jewelry for the woman who loves horses and has more than a bit of Viking shield maiden in her, the SLEIPNIR handmade pendant necklace will surely draw attention whenever it is worn. The one of a kind necklace features a fiercely regal looking, artisan polymer clay horse head pendant, black onyx discs and sterling silver. The unique necklace is named after the eight-legged, stormy gray horse that the Norse god Odin always rode into battle.  Odin and Sleipnir also made frequent journeys through the Nine Worlds which were held in the branches and roots of the world-tree, Yggdrasil. The horse head pendant was hand sculpted from off white polymer clay to mimic carved bone scrimshaw.  To bring out the amazing details of the fierce face of the horse and his mane covered arched neck, a slate gray paint was added and then quickly rubbed off, leaving the paint in the recessed areas. A bit of light brown paint was added to "age" the pendant even more. The back of the pendant has a unique dragonscale design. Two heavy duty sterling silver jump rings secure the pendant to the main body of the necklace.  To perfectly complement the horse head pendant, two sizes of glossy black onyx discs were used. Five groups of three larger discs are found at the front of the necklace, each group separated by a 3 mm sterling silver bead. A fancy sterling silver melon bead separates the larger onyx discs from the smaller ones at the back. Groupings of the smaller discs are found on each side of the necklace, also separated by sterling silver beads. Since the black onyx discs were hand cut, they are very similar in size and shape but there are also some slight variations. The necklace is finished with a sleek sterling silver toggle clasp set. Carefully designed and handmade by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs, the unique SLEIPNIR horse pendant necklace will be a wonderful gift for the woman who loves Viking mythology and regal horses.

*** What is dichroic glass? Dichroic glass (pronounced dye-crow-ick) is a type of glass that has amazing multi-colored, reflective properties, especially when viewed at different angles. Extreme color shifts can often be seen. NASA originally developed dichroic glass for use in satellite mirrors and it was also used on re-entry tiles of the Space Shuttles. Sheets of glass have a special coating applied to it that involves vaporizing various metal oxides into a fine dust with an electro-gun. The oxide dust settles on and coats hot glass inside an airless vacuum chamber. Needless to say, because of of the complex, expensive procedure, only a handful of companies produce dichroic glass for artists to use for their designs.

Since these are old vintage beads, there is some wear which adds even more tribal-inspired beauty.  Capping each side of the bone beads are shiny black onyx discs. To add sinuous drape and eye catching glow to the necklace, sterling silver beads separate the black onyx. The back of the necklace is finished with two groupings of five onyx discs separated by sterling beads. A textured sterling silver hook clasp set finishes the necklace securely. Enamel glass powders in an eye catching design were fused to the copper with a high heat torch. And what a FUN, eye catching design the hoops are! Half of the hoops are a brilliant red: on one hoop the bottom half is red and, on the other hoop, the right side is red. Black and white stripes finish the other halves, the top of one hoop and the left side of the other. The enamel is very shiny so be aware that there are some reflections in the photos that are not there in real life. The back of each hoop is finished with black enamel. The earrings are very lightweight to wear.  To keep the rest of the earring design simple, two sizes and shapes of black onyx gemstones were used. To mimic the black stripes, two shiny black onyx discs were stacked above the hoops. A single sterling silver daisy spacer separates the discs from a black onyx round at the top. African Batik Boho Necklace, Black White Tribal Handmade Jewelry Women

*** How batik bone beads are made:

The batik bone flag beads used in NZURI SANA are so lovely - even more so when you understand the process of making them. Most bone beads are made in Ghana and Kenya, and, to a lesser degree, in Cameroon. "Batik" is traditionally a method of dyeing fabric where a clear wax design is applied to the material. When the material is then dyed, the wax repels most of the dye. This same technique is applied to bleached cow or buffalo bone, usually using hot beeswax because if its extreme resistance to dye. After a pattern is painted on with the hot beeswax, the bone is then dipped in the dye. Most dyes used are made from natural sources: leaves, tree bark and/or sap. The bone beads are left in the dye bath a varying length of time, depending on how dark the bones need to be dyed. Once the desired color is achieved, the bead is dried, the wax is scraped off and the bead is carefully polished. Each bead is done this way, a very laborious process from beginning to end! But this process makes each and every bead unique.

Mosaic Magnesite Necklace, Black Onyx Turquoise Handmade Jewelry Gift

The unique "Medley" handmade necklace features mosaic magnesite, genuine turquoise and black onyx - jewelry gift for women.

Definitely not your run of the mill black and white jewelry, the MEDLEY handmade necklace is filled with delightfully unexpected tiny splashes of color. Perfect for either dress up or dress down, the one of a kind beauty is created with unique mosaic magnesite rounds, faceted turquoise rondelles, black onyx rondelles and sterling silver. Magnesite is a real gemstone that is naturally white or off white in color with either gray or brown matrix. Since the stone is easily dyed, it can be found in many colors. Mosaic magnesite, however, is a composite stone made from magnesite chips (that would otherwise be thrown away) and a hard resin binder. The composite is normally formed into a block, and then beads, pendants and other shapes are carefully cut from it. The binder in these stones is gray which perfectly highlights the natural white color. For added interest, a medley of dyed magnesite chips were added into the binder, creating eye catching beads with bits of turquoise, medium creamy brown, reddish brown and dark brown. Each bead is unique, some with several flecks of different colors and some are beautifully white and gray. Between each round bead are small black onyx rondelles separated from the mosaic magnesite by 2 mm sterling silver beads.

Black onyx and sterling silver beads finish the back of the necklace. For an unexpected surprise, a genuine turquoise rondelle was added to each side of the necklace just after the last mosaic magnesite bead. Since the turquoise is faceted, they add surprising, subtle sparkle to the overall design. A sterling silver hook clasp with granulated dot decoration securely fastens the necklace when worn.
